Saltford Brass Mill
Saltford Brass Mill is a scheduled monument situated on the banks of the River Avon in the village of Saltford, 5 miles west of Bath, in the South West of England. The mill is the most complete survivor of an extensive group of C18th mills in the Avon Valley that were engaged in the production of copper and brass goods.
The links on the picture below provide information about the various workshops and features in and around the mill.

Wildlife
The Brass Mill is host to a wide variety of wildlife, including fish, swans, kingfishers, herons, shags, damselflies,
butterflies and spiders.
Recent visitors which have attracted our attention are otters.
Bethany Sewell, a
photography student at Falmouth University, has used the Brass Mill as the topic for a coursework project. The
project involved making a photographic record of the wildlife in and around the mill and producing a magazine article which
discusses the relationship between conservation of the mill and the conservation of wildlife.

Saltford Brass Mill Through Time
The Saltford Brass Mill Project's archive contains a number of images of the mill in the C19th and
early C20th, a selection of which can be seen at the following link:
Africa Trade
The Bristol Brass Company was formed in 1702 in response to the demand for brassware from Bristol based Merchant
Venturers who were investing in cargoes for trade with West Africa and the Caribbean.
Moral values in the C18th were very different
to today and many manufactures in the region were producing goods to support the triangular trade, including textiles, iron, copper,
brass, gunpowder and glass. The return goods were also key to the creation of wealth in Bristol and Bath, including sugar, molasses,
cotton and tobacco. The demand stimulated technological developments which made Bristol and South Wales world leaders
in the production of copper and brass for over 150 years.
It is important to understand what happened and to learn from those experiences.
One of our objectives is to tell part of that story; the role played by the Bristol brass industry. Click here to learn more
about the brass industry and the transatlantic slave trade.
